Dress in the Laboratories

All employers in commerce, in industry (except where the Mines and Works Act and the Explosives Act apply) in the whole public sector, all government departments, municipalities, agriculture, educational institutions, hospitals, hotels and employers of domestic servants are required to comply with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. This Act calls for, among other things:

The wearing of closed shoes in the laboratories
No loose clothing to be worn
Long hair to be tied back
No person to work alone in an electrical laboratory at any time

Evacuation Procedure

A continuous alarm/siren will sound throughout the building. Thereafter follow the evacuation procedures as described on signs prominently displayed in the building.

Rules

The following rules apply to all students using the laboratories in the Discipline of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering:

No eating or drinking in the laboratories
No one working in the vicinity of working machinery must wear loose clothing which could be caught in the machinery. This applies particularly to ties, ornamental chains and loose sleeved shirts/blouses etc.
Long hair is particularly dangerous and the Act specifically states that this must be tied back.
Closed shoes must be worn by everyone in all laboratories at all times. Students attempting to enter laboratories in open sandals or beach thongs or bare footed, will be prohibited from doing so by the instructor in charge of the laboratory and will also forfeit the lost time and marks.
The person in charge must be present before any practical can begin or machinery switched on by the student.
