Discipline of

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is concerned with planning, designing, constructing and managing the physical infrastructure and facilities needed for the smooth functioning of contemporary society so that the optimal quality of life can be ensured for its people.

Why Study Civil Engineering at UKZN?

Study scaled

Sub-Discipline

Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering focuses on the design and analysis of buildings, bridges, towers, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and able to withstand loads and environmental forces.

Sub-Discipline

Hydraulic Engineering

Hydraulic Engineering focuses on the design and management of water systems, including dams, pipelines, canals, water treatment plants, and flood control infrastructure, to ensure the safe and efficient use of water resources.

Sub-Discipline

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical Engineering focuses on the study of soil, rock, and ground conditions to design safe foundations, earthworks, and retaining structures for buildings, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure.

Sub-Discipline

Transportation Engineering

Transportation Engineering focuses on the planning, design, and management of transportation systems such as roads, railways, airports, and harbours to ensure safe and efficient movement of people and goods.

Sub-Discipline

Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering focuses on developing sustainable solutions for water, wastewater, waste management, and pollution control to protect public health and the environment.

Research

We are a research-led institution, producing knowledge for the rapidly-changing and information-rich world.

STUDENT DISSERTATIONS

UKZN Research Space was developed to increase the visibility, availability and impact of tour students’ research output.

CASSE – Alternative Access Programme

The Centre for the Advancement of Science and Engineering (CASSE) provides alternative access to students, predominantly from disadvantaged educational backgrounds, who do not meet the standard entry requirements for science and engineering qualifications.

How the Programme Works

  • Students complete their degree over one additional year.
  • Augmented modules are taken during the first two years.
  • Thereafter, students join mainstream students and continue with standard modules within the School.

This structured approach provides academic support while ensuring students graduate with the same qualification as their mainstream peers.

Entry Requirements

  • NSC degree pass with Maths, English, Life Orientation and Physical Science Level 4 (50%)
  • Application Perfomace Score (APS) range: 26-48
