Agricultural Engineering integrates scientific principles and engineering practice to solve practical problems in the production and processing of food, feed, fibre and fuels. Agricultural Engineering connects the living world of plants, soil, water and animals with the technology of engineering.
Agricultural Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) combines engineering principles with agricultural sciences to develop innovative solutions for sustainable food production, water management, renewable energy, and environmental conservation. The programme offers a multidisciplinary curriculum that blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience through lectures, laboratory work, and field-based learning at the Ukulinga Research Farm. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills that prepare them for rewarding careers in agriculture, engineering, research, and environmental management in both local and global industries.

The degree of Bachelor of Science in the field of Agricultural Engineering is an Honours equivalent, professional Bachelors degree that extends over four years. Instruction is through lectures, tutorials and laboratory practicals.

All first-time South African applicants to UKZN for entry into degree/ diploma study (Grade 12s and undergraduate transfer students from other institutions) must apply via the Central Applications Office (CAO).
At the postgraduate level, students can specialise in their field by studying for a Master of Science (MSc) degree. Generally, students will use this degree to expand on their undergraduate studies and develop a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of their chosen discipline.
A Doctor of Philosophy programme is offered where students engage in novel research supervised by academic members of staff. This is typically three years of fulltime study and normally follows on from a Master of Science Degree.

UKZN Research Space was developed to increase the visibility, availability and impact of tour students’ research output.
The Centre for the Advancement of Science and Engineering (CASSE) provides alternative access to students, predominantly from disadvantaged educational backgrounds, who do not meet the standard entry requirements for science and engineering qualifications.
This structured approach provides academic support while ensuring students graduate with the same qualification as their mainstream peers.

In 1950, the 500 acre farm ‘Roblyn’ which constituted part of ‘Shortt’s Retreat’ just outside Pietermaritzburg was purchased by the State for R64 000. It was aptly named Ukulinga (meaning ‘to test’ or ‘to endeavour’ in isiZulu) by Effie Scott, the wife of James D Scott. Adjoining land was later purchased increasing the farm to 356 ha. In 1973, it was transferred to the University with the proviso that it continued to be used for educational purposes.
