Dr Akombelwa is a recipient of the Commonwealth Scholarship Award. He is a Registered Professional Engineering Surveyor with the South African Geomatics Council (SAGC) and is also a Fellow and Registered Engineer of the Engineering Institution of Zambia.
Dr Akombelwa recently took part in a Geodetic Site Survey of the main reference station for South Africa’s coordinate system at the Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory which is part of the International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) network that monitors polar motion and defines the precise shape of the Earth. He is currently in the process of setting up a Seismic station at UKZN in collaboration with colleagues specialised in Geophysics at UKZN.
