Overview

The Electrical Engineering curriculum at UKZN is designed to prepare students for a career in the exciting, dynamic field of electrical engineering.  Professionals in this discipline have a focus in the development, maintenance and utilisation of the largest man-made machines in the world – the electrical power grid.  

With the evolution of the smart-grid and the shift from fossil-fuel based generation to renewable generation, the electrical grid is undergoing the largest transition since its inception and Electrical Engineers are at the forefront of this global revolution.  

Electrical Engineers are involved with the generation, conversion, storage, transmission and distribution of electricity to consumers.

Entry Requirements

  •  NSC Bachelor’s degree pass (or equivalent as defined for UKZN)
  • With an APS score of no fewer than 33 points (excluding Life Orientation) with 65% for Mathematics, Physical Science and 50% for English as Home language or as First additional language. (Mathematical Literacy is not accepted as a replacement or substitute for Mathematics).

Modules

The curriculum for the qualification Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical Engineering) comprises modules with a total credit point value of 576 credit points as approved by the Senate. Of these credits, at least 96 must be at Level-4 or above.

The minimum duration for the qualification is 8 semesters. In order to complete the qualification, a student shall complete the modules as specified below.
