Prof Thomas Joachim Odhiambo Afullo


Upon Professor Afullo graduating from the University of Nairobi in 1979, he worked as a telecommunications engineer with Telkom-Kenya for seven years, initially as pupil Engineer, then Executive Engineer and Senior Executive Engineer in charge of Project Engineering (Transmission & Radio Systems Planning). He attained the MSEE from West Virginia University, Morgantown, USA, in May 1983; and the PhD in Applied Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit BrusseBelgiuml in June 1989. 
Joining academia in 1986, he rose through the ranks from Tutorial Fellow to Senior Lecturer and Head of Department of Electrical & Communications Engineering, Moi University, Kenya between 1986 to 1994. He was appointed Lecturer at University of Botswana (1996 – 2002); Associate Professor at UDW/UKZN (2003 – 2011); and Full Professor at UKZN since January 2012.
He was Discipline Academic Leader, Electrical, Electronic & Computer Engineering, from 2014 to 2016. Between July 2003 and December 2009, he was Director, Telkom Centre of Excellence in Rural Telecommunications, University of KwaZulu-Natal. From January 2014 to date, he has been Director, Telkom Centre for Radio Access & Rural Technologies (CRART). He has successfully supervised 28 Masters and 16 PhD students. He is a Specialist Editor, Electromagnetics & AntennasSAIEE Africa Research Journal. He holds an NRF rating of C2. He has a Google Scholar h-index of 17, with 1183 citations. ORCID – 0000-0002-2710-4577.
